Team Faces Tough Regional Bracket

The Mountainair High boys basketball team has made a habit out of mowing down district opponents during the past two seasons.

The Mustangs ran their two-season record against district foes to 18-0 on Saturday night by thumping visiting Vaughn 64-54 in the District 7-1A championship game.

Mountainair's perfection in district play is certainly a major accomplishment, but it provides little more than a noteworthy asterisk at this stage of the season, when the going gets tough.

The Mustangs move on to the opening round of the Class 1A Region D playoffs Friday at 9 a.m. against sixth-ranked and defending state champion Tatum (17-7) at Rio Rancho High.

Tatum, which is coached by 1972 Mountainair graduate Curt Stephens, finished second to powerful Melrose in District 3-1A play.

"Our first scrimmage of the season was against Melrose," said Mountainair coach Mike Calhoon. …
