Two groups of Mountainair students have visited the state Legislature this session to learn how the New Mexico government works.

Mountainair school district STRENGTH program coordinator Anna Marie Nunez took 11 seventh- and eighth-graders on a one-day visit to the Capitol on Jan. 21 as guests of Rep. Rhonda King, D-Stanley.

The STRENGTH program in Mountainair is designed to help middle school students improve grades, build self-esteem, lower absenteeism and work on community projects. It was established by the Torrance County Health Project in partnership with the Mountainair school district.

The Mountainair students served as pages to state legislators during their visit, running errands such as mailing letters, making copies and bringing food to the lawmakers. …
