Mountainair Lawyer To Be District Judge.

A Mountainair man was named Friday to replace the late Neil Mertz as a judge in the 7th Judicial District.

Kevin Sweazea, who has a law office in Los Lunas, was appointed by Gov. Gary Johnson to the judgeship, which became vacant when Mertz died in November.

The governor has the power to fill vacancies in state District Court on the recommendation of a nomination committee. The 7th Judicial District encompasses Torrance, Socorro, Catron and Sierra counties.

Sweazea will finish Mertz's term, which ends in 2002. A contested election for the seat will then be held during the 2002 general election. The elected judge will serve a six-year term, and future elections will ask voters if they wish to retain the judge. …
