Bills Seek Oversight At Private Prisons

Legislation calling for more state control over private prisons in New Mexico has passed the House and Senate in the past, only to be vetoed by Gov. Gary Johnson.

But legislators from the Estancia Valley and East Mountains hope this year will be different.

"I think the attitude has changed, and the governor's office has been more willing to talk about oversight for private prisons," Rep. Rhonda King, D-Stanley, said in a phone interview from Santa Fe on Tuesday.

King has introduced House Bills 124 and 274, which both relate to state oversight of private prisons. Rep. Ron Godbey, R-Albuquerque, proposed HB 413, also relating to private prisons. …
