The trailer for "The Mexican" really has been selling its little heart out in these weeks leading up to the film's opening. Brad Pitt. Julia Roberts. Together. In love. Great pitch, great idea.

And, in fact, two of the world's biggest movie stars do, I am pleased to report, bring to "The Mexican" a tangible chemistry. It is the world's worst secret that the movie would fall hopelessly flat without it.

Pitt, in one of his most easygoing roles, plays Jerry, a relentlessly unlucky chap who works as a bagman for a California mob, headed up at the moment by an imprisoned and soon-to-be-released leader who is sight unseen. …
