Power Plant Vote Will Be April 3.

The stage is set for a battle in early April over the fate of a proposed power plant west of Belen.

The Valencia County Commission will hear a zone-change request on April 3 from Cobisa Corp., which is proposing to build a 145-megawatt natural-gas fired plant about five miles west of Belen.

After hearing more than four hours of testimony earlier this month, some from supporters but more from opponents of the project, the county Planning and Zoning Commission sent the controversial request to the county commission with no recommendation.

Area chambers of commerce, some business owners and other supporters say the estimated $60 million project by the Houston company will ensure that the county won't run out of power and that it will spur economic development and will create jobs. …
