*Basketball team heads into championship game without its second-best scorer, who broke a leg

Fresh off a stinging loss at home in the District 2-3A tournament championship game against St. Michael's, the top-ranked Pojoaque High School boys basketball team received more bad news this week: The team's second-leading scorer, Marcos Rivera, is out for the season with a broken leg.

Pojoaque head coach Matt Martinez said he traveled to Albuquerque with Rivera on Tuesday for an examination at University of New Mexico Hospital. There, doctors confirmed that Rivera had snapped the fibula in his left leg between the knee joint and the ankle.

Rivera, a senior, was averaging 19.8 points per contest as the primary shooting guard for the Elks (19-5). The injury comes at an especially bad time for Rivera and his team. …
