Official Suggests Temporary Ban

A Santa Fe County commissioner wants a temporary clamp on the escalating number of cell-phone towers in the county.

Commissioner Paul Campos said he will push for a months-long moratorium on granting permits for the towers at the March 13 county commission meeting.

The county needs a law regulating placement of the towers to protect the county's sweeping views, he said.

"The towers are very unattractive, and it's the beauty that brings people to the county," Campos said Wednesday. "We clearly need an ordinance, and we don't have one."

The moratorium would give the county Land Use Division time to develop a law that would address protection of the county "viewshed" and allow telecommunications companies to locate towers here, said Deputy County Attorney Chris Graeser in Santa Fe. …
