Payne Seeks City's Bill For Convention Center Basketball

Albuquerque City Councilor Greg Payne is asking Mayor Jim Baca's office to provide an accounting on how much it cost the city to prepare the Albuquerque Convention Center so it could house basketball games.

The New Mexico Slam of the International Basketball League played its first season at Tingley Coliseum but moved to the convention center for the 2000-01 season.

City records show that dressing rooms with showers had to be built in the convention center at a cost of $351,076.

After playing 15 home games, the Slam has not paid $37,500 it owes the convention center, said Connie Beimer of the mayor's office. …
