Annual Salary Idea on Agenda
SANTA FE The House planned to reconsider today a proposed constitutional amendment that could provide New Mexico's part-time legislators an annual salary of about $20,000.
A joint resolution to submit the salary proposal to voters failed Wednesday by one vote, but the House then narrowly approved a request to reconsider the measure, possibly today.
If approved by the Legislature, the proposed constitutional amendment would be submitted to state voters, who have rejected similar proposals in the past.
The pay proposal, sponsored by Rep. Leo Watchman Jr. D-Navajo, would limit annual legislative salaries to the average paid in the five contiguous states of Texas, Colorado, Arizona, Oklahoma and Utah. …
