Archbishop Michael Sheehan visits county jail to celebrate Ash Wednesday ritual with inmates

Archbishop Michael Sheehan ministered on Ash Wednesday to some of the most forgotten of his more than 300,000 faithful men in the county jail.

Roman Catholic inmate Patrick Aragon was among several hundred men who lined up for ashes and Sheehan's blessing. Aragon surprised and then pleased Sheehan by praying publicly for the archbishop at the Bernalillo County Detention Center on the West Side.

Speaking for many of H Pod's 62 inmates, Aragon thanked Sheehan and those who accompanied him for their visit and then asked God to "bless them and protect them."

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, a 40-day period when Christians seek God's forgiveness through penance and good works in preparation for Easter Sunday. …
