Bernalillo Bond Deserves Approval.(Opinion)


Bernalillo Public Schools is asking voters in the district for another installment of bond money to continue its schedule of renovating and improving school facilities.

The bond issue on Tuesday's ballot is for $10 million, which is about the amount of bonds that will be retired, according to Superintendent Gary Dwyer. The district's total bonded indebtedness will remain about the same.

The largest component in the bond issue is the $3 million final phase of renovating the old Bernalillo Middle School, built in the mid-1950s. The project pretty much gutted the structure, then rewired and rebuilt the interior and capped it with a new roof. This phase also includes construction of an auxiliary gymnasium, space much needed to accommodate the middle school's expanded after school activities. …
