Emergency Declared As Drifts Pile Up

RAINSVILLE Pam and Nazario Montoya, snowbound in their village since Sunday night, watched a front-end loader plow another trail through their village Tuesday.

They and other families in this community of approximately 250 had been stuck since the wind started blowing after a weekend snowstorm dumped nearly 2 feet of snow.

"I kinda like it," said Nazario Montoya, a former Mora County sheriff. "Some people said it's given them a chance to catch up with things around here."

Mora County officials declared a state of emergency after most of the 300 miles of county roads became impassable Monday morning, stranding more than 1,000 residents.

The Santa Fe County Commission on Tuesday also declared a state of emergency for snowbound southern Santa Fe County.

While some of the 250 families in the Edgewood and Stanley area have been snowbound, others are having problems getting butane delivered, said County Manager Samuel O. …
