Backers Say Measure Denied Fair Hearing

SANTA FE Republican House members cried foul Tuesday after a GOP-backed bill requiring voters to show identification at election polling places ran into a wall in a Democrat-controlled committee.

"They got slammed. They didn't get a fair hearing," House Minority Leader Ted Hobbs, R-Albuquerque, said Tuesday in an interview.

Hobbs was referring to a bill sponsored by Reps. Joe Thompson and George Buffett, both Albuquerque Republicans. The House Voters and Elections Committee tabled the bill on a 7-5 vote along party lines.

The three Republicans said the committee's quick action ran contrary to promises by new Democrat leaders in the House to give a fair hearing to GOP bills. …
