Baseball teams in northern New Mexico practice when and where they can in winter weather

With a snow-covered field and daytime temperatures struggling to reach the low 40s, the "Boys of Summer" in northern New Mexico have a hard time coming out of hibernation this month.

"I can't believe this weather," said bundled-up Santa Fe High School baseball coach Gary Fiorina following his team's hourlong workout late last week. "You can't even see the field because it has so much snow on it, and it's so cold we have to do our hitting inside."

Looking more like a gathering of Alaskan sled-dog racers than a baseball team, Santa Fe High has found an alternate way of getting in its preseason work despite a thick layer of snow on the school field. …
