Domenici Tells Committee Of Labs' Polygraph Issues.

On its first day, the committee formed to review the reliability of polygraphing national employees heard a dour message from New Mexico's senior senator.

"I know from visiting with lab workers and administrators that the questionable scientific validity of these tests, which are known to give false positives, is a demoralizing factor that affects recruitment and retention," according to a statement released Friday by the office of Sen. Pete Domenici, a Republican.

The Department of Energy earmarked $860,000 last year for an 18-month study of how well the widespread lie-detector tests work in preventing espionage at places like Los Alamos National Laboratory. …
