$7,000 Utility Bill a Stunner for Taylor Ranch Couple.(Business)

They Expected A Smaller Increase

Taylor Ranch resident Renee Harris was not amused when she opened their utility bill Thursday and read "$7,000."

"She thought maybe we were heating the whole neighborhood," said her husband, John Harris.

But he said he burst out laughing.

Apparently the meter reader had accidentally added about 8,800 therms of gas, or billable units, to the number the Harrises used.

Public Service Company of New Mexico's incorrect bill reported 9,003 therms, when the Harrises were using what a typical household uses, about 200.

This type of mistake is very rare, said PNM spokeswoman Julie McCabe. …
