Zuni is a very different place today from the 16th century village where European explorers made first contact with pueblo people. Spain is a very different country from the superpower that sent those explorers out to what must have seemed to them the very edge of the world. And the spirit of contact between the two cultures now is very different from the hostilities of 1540.

Gonzalo Gomez Dacal, minister of language and culture for Spain's embassy in the United States, visited Zuni last week. The Zuni people, once subjects of the Spanish crown, have invited King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia to the pueblo this spring.

The location of that historic meeting may be the place of the initial encounter, where Francisco Vasquez Coronado's troops took the village by force. …
