Tribes Not Paying State May Be Affected

SANTA FE New Mexico's four horse-racing tracks could offer the same types of gambling Indian casinos offer if a Democrat from Deming has his way.

Sen. John Arthur Smith, D-Deming, said his bill is not meant to punish the state's 12 casino-operating tribes, which have refused since last year to share slot-machine revenue with state government.

"It just means competition being fair and having a level playing field," Smith said.

But Senate Minority Leader Stuart Ingle, R-Portales, said he hopes Smith's bill will prompt tribes to reconsider their refusal to share slot machine profits. …
