Three die on icy highways in storm meteorologist calls 'equal-opportunity menace'

Slippery roads kept trucker Robert Foy holed up in an Interstate 40 gas station east of Tucumcari for about five hours Sunday morning.

But Foy wasn't complaining about the delay in his St. Louis-to-Phoenix trip. He said he was glad to be off the ice- and snow-covered roads of eastern New Mexico.

"It was pretty bad," said Foy, who also stopped in Albuquerque Sunday afternoon. "No one in their right mind should be on the road" in those conditions.

At least three weather-related fatalities were reported Saturday on New Mexico highways, authorities said. And icy roads continued to slow travelers throughout the state on Sunday, with almost 20 roadways closed at 1 p.m., according to the state Highway and Transportation Department. …
