* Las Vegas Robertson basketball coach Henry Sanchez says times may change, but the fundamentals stay the same

Spending five minutes with Henry Sanchez is a lot like stepping into a time machine to days gone by.

At 62, the man famous for his Coke-bottle glasses and cheeky grin is among New Mexico's elder statesmen of basketball coaching. The boys head coach at Las Vegas Robertson High School, Sanchez is the curator of a remarkable career spanning better than four decades.

Having taken the grand tour of sidelines at high schools, then colleges, and high schools again, Sanchez is in 41st season on the bench. He's been around so long, his days as a head coach date to the John F. Kennedy administration and to a time, he says, when basketball was more of a game than a business.

"The game has changed and I have changed, but whether we have changed together is up to someone else to decide," he said. "Right now, I'm just happy being where I am."

The biggest differences between now and then, he said, are both subtle and drastic. Aside from the 3-point shot, Sanchez said today's players are not only bigger and stronger, but also less disciplined and generally more spoiled than those of days gone by. …
