Forum Focuses On Agriculture Issues

Recognized as a political subdivision of the state since New Mexico joined the union, irrigation ditch, or acequia, associations are requiring more attention from members today than ever before.

"Acequias traditionally focused on the individual system itself the maintenance, improvements and resource management," said Palemon Martinez, a commissioner of two acequias and president of the Taos Valley Acequia Association.

The acequia systems' government helps water users cooperatively maintain the irrigation system. The regulations governing them, now part of state statute, have roots in Spain. …
