In 1924 The Santa Fe New Mexican newspaper did a story about the curiously dressed European visitor who was staying at La Fonda while he composed music.

Swiss-born Ernest Bloch, who took a sabbatical in town to work on his first Concerto Grosso, told The New Mexican that the heavenly city of Santa Fe had won his heart with her kindness and hospitality. Concerto Grosso No. 1 for String Orchestra with Piano Obligato was completed in Santa Fe far earlier than Bloch had expected.
