"Gunpowder Mouth," Riverside Ensemble's contribution to their Revolutions International Theatre Festival 2001, is the best piece of performance art/theater they've done. Ever.

Why? In Dada, the original theater of the absurd, one method was to cut up poems and scramble the words. The result? Nonsense, a literal and deliberate deconstruction of the text.

Then think of Lewis Carroll's "Jabberwocky." The words are nonsense, but there is a structure to it.

"Gunpowder Mouth" is Riverside's "Jabberwocky" the words and images may be nonsense, but the structure is there.

It's like Mark Twain's saying that "the difference between the right word and the next-best word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug. …
