Painter Bob Schwan really likes dogs, but he has no idea why he started focusing all his attention on painting his two poodles and other people's pooches this year.

Even though he has nearly 90 bright, colorful paintings of dogs under his belt, he isn't tired of putting man's best friend down on paper. When clients respond to images of adorable puppies by smiling, relaxing and letting the stresses of the day melt away, he feels he's already received partial payment for his efforts.

"It's easier to paint my dogs or my friends' dogs than dogs I don't know," the Santa Fe artist explains. "I never do standard portraits, so if I know the animal, I feel I can capture the expressions better."

You might say Schwan has been smitten with puppy love, which is the name of his one-man show at Ventana Fine Art that is part of the Fourth Annual Heart of Santa Fe Gallery Tour. …
