Hall to be named for conductor.(Arts & Culture)

The University of New Mexico's Music Department is honoring one of its own.

The department is naming its main rehearsal hall for Kurt Frederick in ceremonies at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3. The hall is in the basement of the Center for the Arts, Room B-120.

Frederick, who died three years ago at the age of 90, conducted the UNM Orchestra, the Madrigal Singers and taught various subjects from 1942 until his retirement in 1972.

He founded the Albuquerque Youth Symphony, elevated the UNM Orchestra to national prominence and conducted the Albuquerque Symphony, which was the precursor of the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra. …
