* 'Forum' director scouts local talent to deliver fast-paced comedic lines in Musical Theatre Southwest production

A funny thing happened on Terry Davis' way to directing the musical comedy "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum."

Davis decided to check out local talent, instead of waiting for prospects to show up at auditions.

"It occurred to me that a lot of people really didn't know the show," he said. "As I was talking to some of them they'd say 'I've heard of that show, but I really don't know it.' ''

Their passing familiarity with the show probably came from cast albums and the movie, which Davis said is a horrendous version of the stage show. "All the creators of the Broadway show distanced themselves as far as they could from the movie," he said.

In the months before auditions for "Forum," Davis attended three local productions to see who might be available for his show.

He saw "It's a Grand Night for Singing" at Albuquerque Little Theatre, "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" at the Hiland Theatre and "The Secret Garden" at the University of New Mexico's Rodey Theatre. …
