SANTA FE Insurance companies would have to provide contraceptives as part of their prescription drug plans under a House bill introduced this week.
"Women should be able to have a personal, individual choice to use contraceptives. It's discriminatory not to provide contraceptives," said Rep. Mimi Stewart, D-Albuquerque, who is sponsoring the bill in the House.
A majority of insurance companies provide contraceptives to their female clientele, but some faith-based firms such as St. Joseph Healthcare are opposed to covering contraceptives under their prescription drug programs.
