Sandia Puts Win Out Of Reach for SF, 69-62

Standing toe to toe with one of the best girls basketball teams the state has to offer, the Santa Fe High Demonettes nearly pulled off their biggest win of the season Friday night before fading late in a tough 69-62 loss to District 2-5A rival Sandia High.

Played in front of a sparse crowd of about 200 at Toby Roybal Gymnasium on the Santa Fe campus, the Demonettes took a 26-25 lead at halftime and stayed within striking distance most of the way. Until the game's closing minutes, Sandia could not put Santa Fe away.

"It was a great game for the first 30 minutes," Santa Fe coach Ron Drake said. "I feel so bad for the girls, though, because we were only five points down when we let them get those easy layups in the last two minutes. …
