Youths Learn From Elders, Traditions

Textbooks are converging with the real world daily at Santa Fe Indian School, where assignments often come directly from pueblo elders, governors and tribal government workers.

Arising from this Community Based Education Model, educators say, are invigorated communities and motivated students.

Six tribal environment departments in New Mexico, for instance, have set new annual agendas for students for the past four years. Students do the actual field work. To prepare, students in grades 10 through 12 study math modeling, environmental science, tribal government and communication in class.
