Jails Urged To Treat Mentally Ill.

Correction Officials: Community Must Help

Jails must open their doors and collaborate with community-based treatment providers so the vast number of mentally ill people behind bars can be better served, corrections officials said Friday.

"Almost every mentally ill person in jail will be back in the community in less than 90 days they're going back to your neighborhood," Maryland Department of Correction and Rehabilitation director Arthur Wallenstein said Friday. "If we do not make linkages," he said, "we simply continue the revolving door."

Wallenstein and others in the criminal justice field on Friday discussed methods of diverting the mentally ill through community team-building during a National Association of Counties symposium in Santa Fe to address jail overcrowding. …
