Defense Secretary Owns Land, 6 Homes in State

If you live in northern New Mexico, chances are your house is not too far from land owned by Donald Rumsfeld, the man sworn in Friday as President George W. Bush's secretary of defense.

Rumsfeld, according to a financial disclosure statement he was required to file to join the Bush cabinet, has land and ranch interests throughout the northern part of the state from Santa Fe to Taos, Mora and Las Vegas.

He also has an interest in a New Mexico art gallery and is a member of a local golf association.

"I liked him," said R.W Erwin, a Taos-area resident who sold Rumsfeld 71 acres about three years ago and is listed as a creditor in Rumsfeld's disclosure statement.

"He was very friendly and courteous, very likable," said Erwin, who is retired from the oil business. "He didn't talk down to me. He talked straight across, and I liked that."

Rumsfeld, a Chicago native, former congressman and defense secretary in the Ford administration, has lived in El Prado just north of Taos for several years, and he and his wife, Joyce, also have a house in Santa Fe although his disclosure report still lists his primary residence as in Chicago. …
