Cougar Scores 22, Grabs 15 Boards

Visiting Valley got off to a hot start Friday night, but Cibola then put the Vikings into a deep freeze.

Mikal Monette and Ben Miles ignited a 24-2 first-half run that lifted the Cibola boys to an important 66-51 high school basketball victory. It left both teams with 8-7 overall records and 2-1 marks in District 1-5A.

For the Cougars, the victory meant a fresh start in district play. All six 1-5A teams now have at least one district loss.

"This one was worth two games, really," Cibola coach Ray Rodriguez said. "If they beat us, we're down two games and facing an uphill battle. We definitely didn't want that."

Things looked bleak for the Cougars early, with starting post Chris Lange serving a one-game disciplinary suspension and the Vikings blazing to a 7-0 lead. But Miles scored seven consecutive points to put Cibola up 11-9 and start the decisive run.

Monette then scored 11 of his game-high 22 points in the second quarter when the cold-shooting Vikings scored just five points and fell into a 36-14 hole. …
