Plays have a life in stages. The playwright writes and rewrites, passes the script off to friends and mentors, then rewrites again.

Next stage is a table reading: a bunch of actors reading the script around a table, often in someone's living room.

Next comes a staged reading. There are a few props on the stage, and the actors employ some blocking; come downstage for this, upstage for that.
