It was a scene worthy of an opera - a gorgeous blond soprano in a slinky red dress wandering through a crowd of upturned faces, ruffling the hair of one gentleman, tickling the pate of another, and settling into the lap of a third. The cast of characters? Performers and well-wishers at the third annual Opera Southwest gala fund-raiser held Saturday in the atrium of the 500 Marquette Building.

The gorgeous soprano was Leslie Umphrey, who is an assistant professor of voice at the University of New Mexico. She was one of several capable singers who performed famous opera numbers before a crowd of about 120.

The man who had his hair ruffled was none other than John Hooker, architect and the mayor of the Village of Los Ranchos, who attended the party with his wife, Kim Hooker, also an architect. …
