Rode Scores 29 As Rams Top Bengals

Eddie Abreu scored 18 first-half points, and Kevin Smith took over with 12 in the second half to lead Rio Grande to a 71-65 boys high school basketball win over visiting La Cueva on Thursday night.

After trailing most of the first half, the Ravens (12-4, 4-0 in District 2-5A) used a tall lineup to take charge in the third quarter. Guard Andres Urtiaga was the only Raven shorter than 6 feet, 3 inches, playing with Abreu, Smith, Serge Angounou and Giovanni Olomo for the home team.

"That tall lineup created some problems for La Cueva," Rio Grande coach Ron Garcia said. "We were able to match their size inside, but they couldn't match us on the wings."

With the tall lineup on the court, the Ravens outscored the Bears 17-7 in the third quarter to build a 55-44 lead. …
