The New Mexico baseball team has a new place to play and heightened expectations

One man's trash is another man's treasure.Amid the move of the Albuquerque Dukes franchise to Portland, Ore., after last season, the reputation of their longtime ballpark was trashed, condemned as substandard by professional baseball.

But the delighted new tenants treasure the Sports Stadium. The New Mexico Lobos apparently hold another set of building codes.

"This is a first-class, top-five stadium at the collegiate level," says right fielder Donny Sevieri, as the Lobos move into the 10,500-seat ballpark on a permanent basis, for the time being, the first time since the mid-1980s.

Beginning Saturday, they play host to New Mexico Highlands in the 2001 opener.

Though it's a move just a few blocks north on University Boulevard, it's significant enough to coax UNM into opening at home for the first time in 12 years. …
