Leaking Mineral Oil Destroys Lab's Lasers.(New Mexico)

LANL Accident Cost Nearly $2 Million

SANTA FE Almost 6,000 gallons of mineral oil ultrapure, unscented baby oil destroyed close to $2 million in lasers when it leaked from a tank at the Los Alamos National Laboratory earlier this month.

Department of Energy officials at the Albuquerque Field Office called for a special "Type B" investigation of the leaking oil, said Al Stotts, a department spokesman in Albuquerque. Such investigations are conducted by DOE officials and reserved only for accidents that cause up to $2.5 million in damage.
