Flutist Herbie Mann is a jazz pioneer. He was one of the first to incorporate Brazilian rhythms into his music back in the bossa nova days. Early on he merged funk into his compositions. His interests span the globe.

Now Mann, a Santa Fe resident, has reached back into his family's Romanian roots for inspiration for his new album, which is another pioneering effort.

A trip to Hungary last year validated that inspiration. The result is this recording of 11 beautiful, haunting compositions, five of them by Mann. …
