Duke City Group Goes Into Schools

Alcalde Elementary School students in Espanola were infatuated with opera last week.

After two hours a day of imagining, writing lyrics and singing, a mini-opera emerged. Parents were invited to the grand event Jan. 19.

"So in one week, they are doing an eight-minute opera that they completely created themselves," said Gail Gottlieb, a professional singer and vice president of Opera Unlimited in Albuquerque.

In a class of fourth and fifth graders, 25 students developed a libretto.

"Lucky Mountain" is about poachers on a mountain hunting out of season. Snowbell, one wise woman, tells the creatures that without cooperation they are in grave danger. …
