We Can't Ignore Water Warning.(Opinion)

State engineer Tom Turney's pronouncement last week that Santa Fe's two publicly owned water systems are in danger of running dry wasn't a surprise. But it had some shock value nonetheless. Turney said he will no longer recommend approval for new subdivisions that depend on Santa Fe County's water system. In Turney's view, the county system only has rights to water through 2016, when its San Juan-Chama diversion leases are up.

Get a permanent supply of wet water or forget about positive comment on future building plans, Turney told the county.

Turney can't issue the same threat to the city, since he doesn't review new development within the city limits. …
