Sudden Power Need a Mystery.(Opinion)


West Las Vegas residents are understandably annoyed with Public Service Company of New Mexico. The power company has begun running its noisy, diesel-powered generating station in their neighborhood for hours at a time a big change. Until about six months ago, PNM had fired up the station only once a month or so, and only for a few hours.

Neighbors have likened the roar and hum of the big engine to the sound of helicopters, and say the noise level is about the same as being at an airport. The nuisance is compounded by traffic it sometimes takes as many as a dozen big trucks a day to keep the station's fuel tank full.

Why the station has suddenly begun operating longer is something of a mystery. …
