Pension Fund Committee Upbeat Despite Returns.

Rocky stock markets took a toll in 2000 on financial returns at the Public Employees Retirement Association, the pension fund for state, county and municipal workers in New Mexico.

After three straight calendar years of 18 percent returns the value of the PERA fund, now totaling more than $8 billion, increased less than 1 percent during 2000.

Returns at the PERA during the late 1990s far outpaced long-term expectations, which set a goal of 8 percent annual increases.

While results in 2000 fell below that long-term mark, a meeting of the PERA Investments Committee remained upbeat Tuesday.
