8 of Past 9 Stops In SW Santa Fe

All but one of the Santa Fe Police Department's DWI checkpoints in the past two years was in the southwest part of the city, which two city councilors say unfairly targets residents of that area.

Between March 1999 and November 2000, the police department conducted nine sobriety checkpoints resulting in 35 arrests, according to police records obtained by the Journal North. Of those nine roadblocks, six were at the intersection of Camino de Chelly and Agua Fria Street, which is in south Santa Fe, the records indicate.

"I'm sure they'd find as many DWI offenders on the east side of town as the west side of town if they'd set up a roadblock on that side of the community," said City Councilor Frank Montano, whose District 3 covers much of western Santa Fe. …
