* Scientists pair the VLA with a Netherlands telescope to take bright pictures of neighboring system

New Mexico scientists unveiled striking new pictures Tuesday of one of astronomy's most familiar faces the nearby Pinwheel Galaxy.

Using the Very Large Array's ability to detect naturally occurring radio emissions, Socorro astronomer David Thilker took a picture showing hydrogen gas in the galaxy.

Thilker and colleagues Robert Braun of the Netherlands Foundation for Research in Astronomy and Rene Walterbos of New Mexico State University used the combined power of the VLA and Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope in the Netherlands to take the pictures. …
