If any University of New Mexico men's basketball player of the past 20 years had "future coach" written all over him, it was Kelly Graves.

Let us count the ways.

*A natural recruiter? Graves, the Lobos' starting off-guard in 1985-86 and '86-87 after transferring from Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho, could talk the ears off a stalk of corn and then sell them for a tidy profit.

As a postgame interview, Graves was an effortless phrasemaker. He never met a microphone he didn't like, never saw a notepad he couldn't fill.

"That was my CNN shot," he volunteered one night during the 1986-87 season the first year the college game universally adopted the 3-point line after having completed what probably was UNM's first-ever 4-point play. …
