Interior Should Defer Decision on Sandias.(Editorial Page)


President Clinton seems hellbent on using his final days in office to change the status of as much federal land as possible by executive order. For instance, on Friday with the stroke of a pen he declared nearly 60 million acres of U.S. Forest Service land off-limits to new roads development.

Time will tell whether his actions will prove to have been an effective way to protect the environment. Though some areas probably are in dire need of protection, such a sweeping use of power could further divide those who have an interest in public lands and create a backlash.

With less than two weeks left for this administration, Clinton is not the only lame duck who may be considering action concerning federal land. …
