Team Due If Funding For Stadium Approved

Albuquerque will have a new Pacific Coast League baseball team in 2002 if voters in April approve spending millions of tax dollars to help bankroll a new or renovated ballpark.

Russ Parker, owner of the Calgary Cannons, signed the agreement Tuesday, less than an hour before the deadline set by buyer Martin "Mike" Koldyke.

No one would reveal the franchise price tag. But Ken Young, who negotiated for Koldyke and is expected to oversee operations of the ball club, acknowledged it was more than $10 million.

"We had a deadline of 5 o'clock (EST)," Koldyke, a Chicago financial investment broker, said by phone from his ranch in northern New Mexico.

"For the last 90 days, we've felt we were on the edge," said Young, who is also president of the Norfolk Tides of the International League. …
