Bears Girls Able To Return Favor

The second-ranked Sandia boys high school basketball team defended its homecourt in a big way as Chris Jenkins scored 26 points to lead the Matadors past No. 5 La Cueva 77-68 in a District 2-5A matchup Tuesday night.

The Matadors (12-3, 2-1) took control of the game with long-range shooting in the third quarter. They had four 3-pointers in the period to take a 62-49 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Sandia seemed to put things in cruise control in the fourth, and it really seemed to work against the Matadors. They turned over the ball several times in the last three minutes and inexplicably sent the Bears (11-4, 2-1) to the line 18 times in the quarter.

Sandia point guard Jeff Hart, who chipped in with 24 points, finally was able to calm down his teammates and help get the victory. …
