SANTA FE Lowering taxes, improving skills of the state's work force, enhancing health care and boosting incentives to attract companies should be priorities this year, legislative leaders told an annual gathering of business leaders Tuesday.

Reducing the highest tax rate is an important issue and deserves support, said Senate President Pro Tem Richard Romero, D-Albuquerque, at the "Business Day in Santa Fe 2001" Tuesday morning at La Fonda.

"I propose that we look at the possibility of lowering our top personal income tax bracket, which is now at 8.2 percent," Romero told about 400 people in the historic hotel's cavernous Lumpkins Room. …
